From vulnerability → to resilience

“Growing sustainable farms, strengthening families, and building resilient rural communities.”

About the Project

Agriculture is an important part of Cambodia’s rural life, providing food, livelihoods, and opportunities for families and communities. KBO works alongside smallholder farmers to build on this strong agricultural foundation by promoting sustainable farming practices, diversified production, climate resilience, and stronger community-based organizations.

KBO’s Community Development Project began by promoting practical approaches such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), organic agriculture, composting, crop diversification, and farmer self-help groups. Through continuous learning and collaboration with farmers, the project has expanded to include climate-smart agriculture, livestock production, savings groups, market linkages, environmental protection, and community resilience.

Today, the project goes beyond increasing agricultural production. It supports farmers to strengthen their knowledge and skills, improve household livelihoods, work together through farmer groups, develop new income opportunities, and care for the environment. Young people are also encouraged to participate in sustainable agriculture and explore farming as an opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship, and a meaningful future in their communities.

At the heart of the project is a simple belief: when farmers have the knowledge, skills, confidence, and opportunities to make the most of their land and local resources, they can build stronger families and more resilient communities.

KBO is therefore not simply supporting farmers to grow crops—it is walking alongside rural communities as they grow sustainable livelihoods, strengthen self-reliance, and build a better future together.

Project Activities and Story

Growing Together, Building Self-Reliance

KBO supports farmers groups and helping farmers work together to strengthen production, savings, and local markets. Each group receives capital in start-up capital from KBO and maintains a savings fund with group to support farming activities, equipment, livestock, and unexpected needs.

Farmers produce vegetables, fruits, rice, and livestock, including organic rice growing. By working collectively, farmers share knowledge, resources, and opportunities. Connecting Farmers to Local Markets. A community agricultural shop allows farmers to sell their fresh products locally without travelling individually to larger markets. Products are collected from farmers, sold through the shop, and where possible connected to larger markets.

This approach helps farmers save time and transportation costs, access fairer markets, and reduce dependence on middlemen.

“Together, farmers are not only producing food—they are building stronger livelihoods, greater self-reliance, and a more sustainable future for their communities.”

Impact on Smallholder Farmers Through Training on Sustainable Agriculture

This video highlights the positive impact of KBO’s Sustainable Agriculture Training on smallholder farmers. Through practical training, farmers gain knowledge and skills in sustainable farming practices and learn how to apply these techniques in their own fields and households.

The training encourages farmers to work together, share knowledge, improve agricultural practices, diversify their livelihoods, and strengthen their confidence and self-reliance. It also demonstrates how community cooperation can gradually develop into stronger farmer groups and agricultural cooperatives.

From knowledge to practice, and from cooperation to self-reliance, KBO works alongside farmers to build more sustainable livelihoods and resilient rural communities.
