Karuna’s Finding Her Voice
From Struggling farmer to a More Secure Future
At just one and a half years old, Mesa could not walk, speak, or communicate with others. He depended completely on his mother for even the simplest daily activities. Today, at 12, Mesa is a Grade 5 student who walks to school, rides a bicycle, speaks in simple sentences, helps his family with household chores, and confidently interacts with others. This remarkable journey has been shaped by years of rehabilitation, special education, family coaching, and compassionate support from Karuna Battambang Organization. Mesa’s story shows what becomes possible when a child is given the right support, opportunity, and someone who believes in his potential.
At 17, Malai Karuna is discovering that learning English can open doors far beyond the classroom. Once shy and hesitant to speak, she now confidently shares her ideas with classmates and communicates with people from different backgrounds. Through the project’s extracurricular English class, Karuna has strengthened her listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a supportive and enjoyable environment. More importantly, she has found the courage to believe in herself and her future. Karuna dreams of continuing to university, where English will be essential for her studies and career.
For Mr. Noun Hoeun and his family, sustainable agriculture has become a pathway out of hardship. Once struggling with low crop yields, limited farming knowledge, and an income barely sufficient for daily needs, the family is now producing organic rice and vegetables and raising livestock with greater confidence. With KBO’s training and support, their rice harvest increased from 1,250 kg to 1,740 kg, while sales of rice, pigs, and poultry generated more than USD 1,000. Today, the family has improved its living conditions, reinvests in livestock, supports their children’s education, and looks to the future with greater confidence and self-reliance.
